Emotional Design

Imagine walking into a room where the light isn't just illuminating but orchestrating your emotions, guiding you from serenity to excitement with every shift in hue. Light can dramatically affect your emotional state. Soft warm lighting creates a sense of comfort and relaxation, while bright cool tones boost alertness and focus. High contrast between light and dark can intensify emotional engagement, evoking feelings of tension. The quality and colour of light transform spaces and influence mood. Techniques like focal glow and ambient luminescence enrich your immersive experience, crafting a uniquely emotional journey.

Presented in the company of NGV’s Collection of early twentieth-century design, the interactive ORA light draws associations with the development of psychological inquiry and the growing awareness of environmental factors on human emotions and behaviour.

The power of illumination lies in its ability to shape your emotions and perceptions, transforming ordinary spaces into extraordinary experiences. Light isn't just a functional necessity; it's a tool that influences how you feel and interact with your surroundings. The strategic use of coloured light can regulate emotions and enhance comfort levels. This approach, known as affective design, guarantees that specific lighting environments create tailored atmospheres based on preconceived requirements.

Building on the power of illumination, contrast in lighting sharpens emotional impact by intensifying the drama and depth of a scene. When you experience high-contrast scenes, you're immediately drawn emotionally. The stark differences between light and dark create a compelling visual story, heightening emotional appeal and immersing you deeper. High-contrasts can evoke feelings, from tension and drama to mystery and introspection.

Coloured illumination directly influences your mood and emotional state. The colour and mood connection is profound; warm hues like red and orange can make us feel energised and happy, while blues and greens often evoke calmness or even sadness. This isn't just a modern understanding - cultures have used colour in therapies for centuries to influence well-being. When light emits colour into a space, it adds an extra layer of emotional depth. Bright, saturated colours can engage viewers and create a sense of joy, while muted tones might convey somberness. The psychological impact is real; certain colours can trigger neurological pathways and biochemical responses, altering emotions.

While creating comfort with light employs soft and warm tones, harnessing lighting techniques to evoke drama involves manipulating contrast, intensity, and direction to provoke stronger emotional responses. To create emotion, consider how light plays with different effects; hard light can produce an edgy and intense atmosphere, while the direction from which light comes greatly impacts the viewer's perception. For example, lighting from below can create an unsettling feeling, perfect for dramatic scenes, whereas overhead lighting typically offers a sense of safety and clarity.

Creating transformative environments involves leveraging dynamic lighting techniques to reshape how individuals emotionally and perceptually engage with their surroundings. When you step into a space where innovative lighting is employed, you're not just seeing the surroundings; but feeling it. The interplay of coloured light can turn an ordinary space into an emotional canvas, impacting each person uniquely. Incorporating interactive coloured illumination fosters personalisation, for coloured light has an emotional meaning and, therefore, can influence the atmosphere of a space.

NOW or NEVER in MELBOURNE

Addressing the theme ‘Look through the image’, the expansive Now or Never 2024 program invites audiences to interrogate what’s in front of them, explore deeper meanings, contemplate layers of symbolism and question reality – from AI-generated narratives and visual distortion works to cinematic and augmented reality experiences.

This year the festival brings visual language to the forefront of the program, with a focus on the presentation of large works designed to shift perspectives and push boundaries.

“The relation between what we see and what we know is never settled. Each evening we see the sunset. We know that the earth is turning away from it. Yet the knowledge, the explanation, never quite fits the sight.” John Berger, Ways of Seeing.

Now or Never is an invitation to be a part of a community that celebrates creativity, inquiring minds, and exploration. A call for curiosity and collective awe. A step into the unknown. Follow us into uncharted territories.
